Dorothy grew up in Denver until she moved to Grand Lake to attend high school. She graduated in 1951 from Grand Lake High School. While in school, she worked at the phone company and there began a long career with the company. It was in Grand Lake that she met the love of her life, Orval, the local horse wrangler and sheriff. Before the end of their first date, he declared, “I am going to marry you!” and on October 5, 1952, he did just that. That was the beginning of a strong and loving marriage that lasted 49 years.
They moved to Brush, Colorado and their first child, Diane was born. Dorothy loved being a mom and spent her days caring for her child and creating a home for her family. She then moved to Greeley, Colorado and her family grew as she had 2 more children, Bruce and Doris. She was able to care for 3 children born 18 months apart and still keep her smile and loving nature.
Orval and Dot (as she was called) moved to New Mexico where Orval worked in the mines in Magdelena. They moved from there to Albuquerque, and in1962, she and her family moved into the home she would live in for the rest of her life.
Dorothy worked for the Bell telephone company in Human Resources for over 30 years where she earned a reputation for being bright, hard working, easy to work with and always fair. After retiring she became a long time member of the Pioneers. She loved going to the events and seeing old friends and colleagues where they could catch up and reminisce about the old times.
After retirement, Dorothy and Orval travelled through the United States in their RV, joining her sisters and brother in laws and friends for trips across the nation. Dot loved to travel and experience new adventures and experiences. Going to Denmark on several trips was a highlight of their travels where she became an honorary Dane!
After Orval’s passing in 2001, Dot was able to continue her travels across the United States and Europe. She joined her daughters on numerous trips to Europe, the United Kingdom, Alaska and India. She was a great travel partner and brought fun and excitement to every trip.
Dot had breakfast with her friends at the community center for many years and created friendships with many of the folks who attended and the staff. She volunteered in the exercise program and with other activities and earned many awards for her service.
Dorothy was a member of Messiah Lutheran church for over 50 years and they were blessed by her willingness to help with the women’s group, making banners for baptism’s, helping with special events, teaching Sunday School and the greatest joy for her, singing the Lord’s praise with the choir. She attended faithfully each Sunday and drove herself to services until the very last Sunday of her life.
Dorothy Ann Dahl loved the Lord, her family, her friends, flowers, live theater, creating a beautiful home, children, animals, and traveling. She is described as a quiet, loving, generous, and smart woman. Dorothy lived a full and beautiful life filled with love and adventure for 91 years and she will be greatly missed by all who were blessed to know her.
