Larry Andrew Kirk

August 9, 1943 — May 18, 2025

Albuquerque

It is with deep sadness and abiding love that we announce the passing of Larry A. Kirk, who left this world on May 18, 2025, at the age of 81. Larry was a loving father, a lifelong enthusiast of fast cars and open roads, a trusted name in the RV community, and a man whose heart was as big as the engines he loved to watch roar.

Born in the heartland of Ohio on August 9, 1943, Larry’s early life was shaped by change and adventure. When his father received a military transfer, the Kirk family—Larry, his parents, and his sister—made the move to Albuquerque, New Mexico. There, the high desert skies and open roads would later become a backdrop to many of Larry's passions. It was Larry’s love for all things mechanical—and especially fast cars and motorcycles that took root.

Larry began his career as a train engineer, where he developed a deep appreciation for machines, movement, and precision. That early chapter gave way to new ventures in car sales—a natural fit for someone who could talk to anyone and always found joy in helping others get where they needed to go. But Larry was never one to stand still for long.

He had a remarkable ability to reinvent himself—always learning, always growing, and always giving his all to whatever he pursued.

A man of many talents and fearless ambition, Larry founded his first business manufacturing jewelry, combining creativity with a keen business mind. His hands shaped not only precious metals but also a life built on risk, reward, and reinvention. He would later return to the automotive world, ultimately finding his niche selling cars and, finally, settling on RVs—a career that brought him great pride and many cherished friendships for over 40 years.

He didn’t just sell RVs—he sold dreams, family vacations, and a sense of adventure. Customers became friends, and friends became family.

Larry had a deep love for car racing, spending countless weekends watching races with the same passion he brought to his work and family. Whether it was the roar of engines or the thrill of competition, he found joy in the speed and spirit of the sport.

By his side was his loyal dog, Bill—a spunky, young, gentle-hearted schnauzer who was more than a pet. Bill was Larry’s shadow, his co-pilot, and his best friend. Whether they were driving, at the office or just sitting on the porch, Bill was there, and never far from Larry’s lap.

Larry's legacy is not just in the businesses he built or the vehicles he sold, but in the hearts he touched—with a quick joke, a helping hand, or an encouraging word. He taught us all that it's never too late to start again, that courage is found in trying something new, and that love—whether for family, pets, or fast cars—should always be worn proudly.

Larry’s life might have followed a different path had his time in the U.S. Navy not been cut short. Prior to becoming a train engineer, in 1961 at the age of 18 he enlisted with pride and a strong sense of duty, eager to serve his country and explore the world. However, recurring health issues—rheumatic fever and asthma—forced him to leave the service earlier than he had hoped. Though his military career was brief, it was meaningful. He received an honorable discharge and carried his service with quiet dignity.

Larry’s journey may have crossed its final finish line, but the love he shared and the roads he traveled will echo on in the lives he touched. May he rest in peace.

Larry was proceeded in death by his parents, Edward M. Kirk and Dorothy M. Minnameyer, sister, Lynn Clay (née Kirk) and grandson, Brendan T. McClure. He is survived by his son, Doug Kirk and his wife Alli, and their 2 children, Kai and Kellan, and daughter, Barbara Kirk, who will forever carry his memory in their hearts. He is also survived by a wide circle of friends and extended family who will miss his stories, his humor, and his presence.

In his honor, a celebration of life gathering will be held on June 16, 2025, at Strong-Thorne Mortuary, 1100 Coal Ave SE, Albuquerque, NM 87106, just east of I-40. The family invites friends to wear their favorite racing gear or something casual—just as Larry would’ve wanted. The service will start at 10:30 a.m., followed by a reception where refreshments and food will be served as we share stories and memories of Larry.

Larry had a deep love for flowers and the beautiful rainbow of colors they brought into the world. He often said that "life would be boring without color," and he carried that vibrant spirit with him every day.

As a reflection of Larry’s colorful and caring nature, those wishing to do something meaningful in his memory are encouraged to make a donation to Silver Horizons, an organization that provides vital support to seniors in our local community by providing groceries, bill assistance, minor home repairs, and other means of support.

A contribution in Larry’s memory is a meaningful way to brighten someone else’s life—just as he brightened so many of ours.
